After the completion of series of ultra-light magnesium alloys experiments and the construction of pilot production platform, the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys has further enhanced the research and development of ultra-light magnesium alloys. Recently, an ultra-light magnesium alloy with the density of 0.9 g/cm3, which can be floating on the water, was trial-produced successfully in magnesium center. After preliminary tests, this alloy showed an excellent plastic processing ability and an ultra-high plasticity, which can be extruding, rolling, and forging under room temperature, resulted the room temperature elongation more than 90% and the reduction of area more than 70%. This series of ultra-light magnesium alloys would have a significant prospect and widely applications in the defense and military and aerospace fields.
